YINAN, China Oct 16, 2024 /AsiaNet=연합뉴스/-- Mulberry paper wine pouch, with a history of over 1,700 years, is a traditional folk vessel primarily used for storing wine, functioning like modern wine bottle. For centuries, it has provided a glimpse into China's traditional handcrafted artistry. In ancient times, mulberry paper wine pouch was a popular commodity; it could be tied to the waist, tossed into baskets, or hung on vehicles, making it quite convenient. The craftsmanship has been passed down through generations, with sons inheriting their fathers' skills. Nevertheless, as time has passed and society has advanced, mulberry paper wine pouch has largely been replaced by more contemporary products.

The mulberry paper used for wine pouch is characterized by its softness, non-corrosiveness, and strength, as it is made entirely from plant fibers. Additionally, the unique crafting technique, which includes a complete sealing process, allows wine pouch to store spirits with an alcohol content of over 40% ABV without deterioration. Over time, the stored liquor becomes increasingly mellow and fragrant.

In Qingtuo Town, Yinan County, Linyi City, Shandong Province, Lu family possesses the complete technique for crafting wine pouches. Lu Keyang, the fifth-generation artisan, is the current inheritor of this craft. In 2012, he mastered the art of making mulberry paper wine pouches under the guidance and meticulous tutelage of his grandfather, Lu Shantian. In recent years, he has also approached the creation of modern wine pouch from the perspectives of cultural revival, practicality, and collectible craftsmanship. He has partaken in intangible cultural heritage promotional activities organized by the municipal and county cultural tourism bureaus, including the Linyi Calligrapher Cultural Festival and Shandong Province Arts and Crafts Exhibition, where he has received multiple awards. He has earned admiration from many in the cultural, collecting, and craft communities.

Building on his dedicated research into the craft of mulberry paper wine pouch making, Lu Keyang has actively engaged in efforts to pass on this traditional skill. He has generously shared his knowledge with individuals such as Yang Xiaohua and Wang Chengxiang, laying a solid foundation for the protection and inheritance of this craft.
