Skilled artisans delicately etch and sculpt eggshells using various techniques like intaglio, incised carving, hollowing, relief carving, and shadow carving, their knives dancing on the delicate surface, leaving behind dazzling patterns.
To carry forward the traditional Chinese culture and provide a platform for young people to engage with and contribute to the preservation of intangible cultural heritage, the Egg Carving Art Club at the Puwang Town Central Primary School in Yinan County, Linyi City, Shandong Province organizes themed egg carving activities. This helps to pass on the ancient and fascinating art of egg carving among children.
With just an eggshell, a pencil, and a carving knife, students meticulously craft intricate egg carvings through processes like brainstorming, sketching, and outlining. The classroom is adorned with a variety of themed egg carvings, including the Twelve Zodiac Animals, the Twenty-Four Solar Terms, and figures from ancient Chinese mythology, each one so vivid and lifelike that they captivate the beholder.
Zhang Rongshan, a teacher at the school, shares the history, origins, and essence of egg carving through his own creations, teaching students the proper use of the specialized carving knife to etch designs. His classes are warmly welcomed by both children and parents, allowing the younger generation to immerse in and appreciate the depth of traditional Chinese culture.
