-- Fifth National Calligraphy Conference Fills Linyi with Scent of Ink

LINYI, China Sept. 29, 2025 /AsiaNet=YONHAP/-- Recently, "Reencountering the Preface to Orchid Pavilion Poetry Collection" -- the Fifth National Calligraphy Conference -- kicked off at the former residence of Wang Xizhi, China's best-known calligrapher, in Linyi, Shandong. Over a hundred calligraphers and calligraphy enthusiasts from China and abroad gathered here, joining together in a cultural rendezvous with the brush as their medium and ink as their soul.

As a key supporting event of the 21st Calligraphy Sage Culture Festival of Linyi, the conference focused on "promoting the culture of the calligraphy sage and igniting public passion for calligraphy." The atmosphere was both lively and orderly. The graceful curves of the character "zhi" and the dynamic spirit of "shui" (water) bloomed from the tips of brushes. Children stood on tiptoe, gripping their brushes with young and tender strokes, yet they were deeply earnest, unaware of the ink staining their fingertips.

A 14-meter-long scroll of the Preface to Orchid Pavilion Poetry Collection was jointly created by 15 calligraphers, who took turns demonstrating five script styles: the dignity of regular script, the fluidity of running script, and the boldness of cursive script, among others. Layers of ink spread elegantly across the paper, drawing exclamations of admiration from onlookers.

The conference also received 1,795 calligraphy submissions from adolescent participants. Thirteen-year-old Li Bingde, who took part in the on-site writing activities, shared: "I feel truly proud to participate in this event. Practicing calligraphy allows me to focus and helps me appreciate the value of traditional culture."

International friends were also drawn by the allure of ink. South Korean calligrapher Yeo Nam-hoi wielded her brush with passion on site: "It's my first time in Linyi. The calligraphy atmosphere here is incredibly rich. I can almost feel the spirit of Wang Xizhi." Another visitor from South Korea, Lee Kang-ok, wrote "China-South Korea friendship" in Hangul, adding: "Linyi is the birthplace of calligraphy. Coming here feels like returning to the 'hometown of calligraphy' -- it's deeply moving."
